We want to pray concerning the harvest in Nigeria. As some of you are aware, Nigeria is passing through a very difficult time. The church in Nigeria is facing an existential threat as ISIS, having been displaced from Syria and North Africa, now seeks to establish a stronghold in Northern Nigeria. Two deadly jihadist groups, Boko Haram and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) have come together under ISIS, and Fulani Bandits (who are also driven by the same islamist agenda) now operate freely in some parts of Nigeria.
Thousands of Christians have been abducted from schools and their homes and are made to forcefully convert to Islam, those who refuse are killed. It is estimated that in the past 12 years, over 49,000 Christians have been killed; over 18,000 have been kidnapped, over 2,000 churches have been destroyed and millions have been displaced and are now in IDP camps, having lost their homes and means of livelihood.
The jihadists specifically target pastors, missionaries and churches for their attacks. They have vowed to eliminate Christianity from Northern Nigeria. This is no doubt a pushback against the gains made in missions in the past century.
Government’s inaction and complicity sometimes, has emboldened these groups and many people fear that Nigeria may be thrown into ethno-religious conflict that may result in the breakup of the nation and create a refugee problem that would affect not only Africa but the entire world. Nigeria has over 200 million population!
The Country is not stable. Serious division/cracks are endangering the peace. People are still dying in numbers because of Covid-19, even those who are vaccinated (the over 60s). Education structures and strategies are failing our students, teachers do not attend for fear of Covid-19. We are experiencing too many School drop outs. Unemployment figures are staggering high.
Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Around the world countless Christians from many traditions are praying and fasting today for the crisis in Ukraine...
...in response to an invitation issued by church leaders. And so, on this very special day, we join with millions focusing our prayers upon the escalating tragedy in Eastern Europe.
As I enter prayer now, acutely aware of the chaos in our world, I choose to be still; to breathe slowly, to re-centre my scattered senses upon the presence of God.
Father God, on this sober day traditionally marked by repentance and an awareness of life’s shortness, I prepare my heart to address the unfolding tragedy in Ukraine. I do believe that my prayers can make a difference, but forgive me and help me in my unbelief (Mark 9:24).
I choose to anchor my hope in the promise of God’s presence today, joining with the ancient praise of all God’s people, in Ukraine and around the world, using the words of Psalm 46...
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Psalm 46:1-3 (NIVUK)
This Psalm is going to provide the framework for all my prayers today. Psalm 46 is sometimes known as Luther’s Psalm because the great German Reformer would sing it in his darkest moments, and turned its words into his famous hymn, A Mighty Fortress is Our God.
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
Psalm 46:1-3 (NIVUK)
A time of trouble? The earth giving way? Mountains quaking? The world feels a lot like that right now, but the psalmist describes an extraordinary posture of confidence and peace in spite of such trouble.
How is this possible? Because of God’s ever-present help, even and especially in terrifying and chaotic times.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Psalm 46:4-5 (NIVUK)
I pray now for the church in Ukraine, a country in which 70% of the population calls themselves Christians. I particularly remember those seeking to share the hope of Jesus and bind up so many broken hearts.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 46:6-7 (NIVUK)
It’s true that nations are in uproar and kingdoms appear to be falling. But the Psalmist describes God lifting His voice and melting the earth.
What word or words might God be speaking over the uproar in the world today? Remembering my authority as a child of God, and the power of His word in my mouth, I speak out these words prophetically now over the current crisis.
Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
Psalm 46:8-9 (NIVUK)
Prince of peace, I cry out to You now, asking that You would somehow make war cease, ending the senseless violence and destruction in Ukraine.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 46:10-11 (NIVUK)
It’s interesting that this famous verse about being still and knowing God, so often used in the context of personal piety, actually comes in a Psalm about war. It’s an authoritative command to chaotic circumstances to ‘be still’, and to warring nations to bow the knee and acknowledge the King of Kings who will eventually, inevitably be exalted (v10), above every power, every personality and every political system.
And so I pray now in the name of Jesus for peace and perspective to come upon President Putin in Russia and President Zelensky in Ukraine. Lord, I cry out to You to give them wisdom beyond human wisdom. Put a desire for peace in their hearts and a strategy for de-escalation in their minds and on their agendas. Bring some kind of breakthrough, I pray today.
God, in this very special season, with the world in such a mess, I yield to Your work in my life remembering the apostle Paul’s challenge in Romans 12:
I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:1-2 (NIVUK)
And now, as I prepare to take this time of prayer into the coming day, the Lord who loves me says to me in Luke’s Gospel…
When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.
Luke 21:9 (NIVUK)
Father, help me to live this day to the full,
being true to You, in every way.
Jesus, help me to give myself away to others,
being kind to everyone I meet.
Spirit, help me to love the lost,
proclaiming Christ in all I do and say.
Amen.
